Moyo Company, Tanzania
Moyo is a young and small business run in the suburbs of Dar-Es-
Salaam in Tanzania. The company was established in December 2006 by Ayesha Mawji who employs two Tanzanians on a full time basis to produce a range of funky accessories using local Kanga and Kitenge materials.
A selection of funky coloured interior decorations include hearts, tote bags and "wires" - table decorations made from wire covered with brightly coloured cotton balls - provide an exciting range of unique products made in Tanzania.
Tailors at work in the Moyo Workshop, Dar-Es-Salaam.The unique aspect of Moyo's products are the coloured balls that adorn each product! These are made using the brightly coloured Kanga and Kitenge material adding colour to each product. A number of people around Dar-Es-Salaam, including security guards, produce these balls on a piece-work basis. This is means of adding to small incomes earned as guards and helps to fill quiet nights with some income generating activity, while also ensuring that they remain alert to any potential break-ins! Each ball earns the producer an equivalent of 5 pence per ball.
Moyo employees put finishing touches to products in the gardens of the workshop.Moyo has a small workshop adjacent to Ayesha's home where the full time employees work. The piece-workers also have space to drop in and work when they can.
